What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

Find and turn off your main water shut-off valve immediately. Every second counts—a burst pipe can release 4-8 gallons per minute. The valve is typically near your water meter or where the main line enters your home. Turn clockwise to close. If you can't find it, turn off water at the street meter.

If water is near electrical outlets, switches, or your breaker panel, turn off electricity to affected areas. Never touch electrical equipment while standing in water. If you can't safely reach the breaker panel, call your utility company for emergency power shutoff.

Once water is off, start damage control. Move furniture and valuables away from water. Use towels, mops, and buckets to contain and remove water. Open doors and windows for ventilation. Set up fans if it's safe to use electricity. Document all damage with photos and video for insurance.

Call an emergency plumber immediately—they can repair the pipe and prevent further damage. For significant water damage, also call a water damage restoration company. Contact your insurance company to report the incident. Don't attempt DIY pipe repairs unless you have plumbing experience.
