Sewer Line Warning Signs

When multiple drains slow or clog simultaneously—especially on lower floors—the main sewer line is likely affected. A single clogged drain is usually a branch line issue. But when your toilet, shower, and sink all drain slowly at once, or a backup in one causes water to appear in another, you have a main line problem requiring professional attention.

The smell of sewage inside or outside your home indicates sewer problems. Healthy sewer lines are sealed—you shouldn't smell anything. Odors suggest: cracked or broken pipes, dried-out P-traps allowing sewer gas through, blocked venting, or main line problems. Persistent sewage odors are a health concern and warrant immediate professional inspection.

Gurgling from toilets or drains when using other fixtures indicates venting or main line problems. The gurgling is caused by air being displaced as water tries to drain through a partial blockage or blocked vent. Occasional gurgling may be minor, but consistent gurgling—especially from toilets when nothing else is running—suggests significant issues.

Unusual changes in your yard may indicate sewer line breaks. Look for: soggy patches or indentations in the lawn over sewer lines, unusually lush green grass (sewage fertilizes growth), sewage odors outdoors, rodent or insect infestations (they're attracted to sewer breaks), and foundation cracks or settling caused by water erosion from broken lines.

Tree roots are the leading cause—they seek water sources and invade pipe joints. Aging pipes (cast iron, clay, Orangeburg) deteriorate over decades. Ground shifting and settling can crack or offset pipes. Grease buildup progressively narrows pipes. Foreign objects create blockages. Knowing your pipe material and age helps predict problems.

Get one when: experiencing any warning signs above, buying a home (essential for older homes), before starting major landscaping near sewer lines, or proactively for homes over 25 years old.
