Pipes Making Noise

Noisy pipes usually have simple causes: water hammer (banging when valves close quickly), loose pipe mounting, high water pressure, sediment in water heaters, or partially closed valves causing whistling. Most pipe noises are annoying but not dangerous—however, they can indicate problems that worsen over time. Identifying the type of noise (banging, humming, whistling, rattling) and when it occurs (during water use, after flushing, constantly) helps diagnose the cause.

Water hammer is a loud bang when water flow stops suddenly—typically when washing machines, dishwashers, or quick-closing valves shut off. The momentum of moving water creates a pressure wave that slams against pipes. Fixes include: installing water hammer arrestors near problem fixtures, securing loose pipes, lowering water pressure, or draining air chambers (turn off main water, open all faucets, then turn water back on). Persistent water hammer can damage pipes and joints over time.

Whistling usually means a valve is partially closed or a washer is worn—check toilet fill valves, faucet aerators, and shutoff valves. Humming often indicates high water pressure (above 80 PSI)—install a pressure regulator. Rattling pipes are loose—secure them with pipe straps or foam insulation. Gurgling drains suggest venting problems—air can't escape properly, creating suction sounds. Popping from water heaters means sediment buildup—flush the tank.

Call a plumber if: noises are accompanied by water leaks, you can't locate the source, noises started suddenly after being quiet, water pressure is inconsistent, or DIY fixes don't work. Water hammer that won't stop can eventually burst pipes or damage appliances. A plumber can install pressure regulators, water hammer arrestors, or secure pipes in walls you can't access. For noises behind walls, professional diagnosis prevents unnecessary hole-cutting.
